The town of Rimavska Sobota, district capital and center of the historical Gemer and Malohont regions, lies in the valley of the river Rimava. The first known reference to it is in a document signed by the Archbishop of Kaloca dated 1270, where the town is named Rymoa Zumbota. In letters-patent dated 5 th May 1334, King Robert guaranteed to Rimavska Sobota the rights and privileges of the town. This day is now celebrated annually with a city feast. From 1784 to 1922 the town was the county town of the Gemer and Malohont regions. The old town itself has 5 adjacent wards: Vysná and Nizna Pokoradz, Mojin, Duzava and Bakta. Rimavska Sobota has more than 25 000 inhabitants. There are several historically and architecturally important buildings, monuments and churches in the town. In the center of the Main Square, on the site of the original Gothic church, stand the Roman Catholic church, built in the Classical style with Baroque features. Also on the square are the town hall which dates from 1801, and of the old shire hall built in the French style, with the coat arms of the Shire of Malohont from 1978, now renovated and housing the M. Hrebenda Library. On Tompa M. Square, with the statue of the Hungarian poet after whom it is named, there is the imposing building of the shire offices built in 1901, symbolizing the wealth of the Gemer-Malohont region. At present, Rimavska Sobota is the base of several important businesses. Source: TIC Rim. Sobota, 1998 2.27.
