Brief information Cerova vrchovina was declared a protected area by the Ministry of Culture (order 113/89), in an area of 16 278 hectares in Southern Central Slovakia stretching up to the Lucenska and Rimavska basins in the north and the Hungarian border in the south. The protected area includes Hajnacka, Petrovska vrchovina and the Filakovska ridge. Filakovo castle mount and Sovi castle in the village Surice also belong to the protected area. Cerova vrchovina ranks amongst the youngest volcanic mountains in Slovakia. It was formed at the end of the Tertiary and beginning of the Quaternary periods. The volcanic landscape is still extant - table top mountains and lava streams (e.g.: Pohansky vrch, Ragac Monica) contrast with rock formations (Hajnacka castle mount). The whole relief is by character hilly although the hills don't generally exceed 300m above sea level. Karanc is the highest hill at area in the 757m above sea level. In the eastern part of the area, which was it affected by volcanic activity, there is sand-stone relief. About 63 % of land of the protected area is covered in forest. There are may elms but also the populous yet undesirable Acacia white. In Northern areas Beech trees are prevalent. The woodless land is prairie or steppe like, and is covered with many interesting species of plant life e.g. thermopile and xeropile. Some examples to be found here would be Stipa, Chrysopogon gryllus, Iris pumila, Pulsatilla pratensis bohemica, Linum hirsutum ssp. glabrescens, Muscari botryoides ssp. transsilvanica, Adonis vernalis. Colutea arborescens occurs rarely, in the forests we can see Lychnis coronaria and other interesting species. Fauna is represented by Mantis religiosa, precious species of butterflies, eagles etc. The mining spaces house a variety of reptiles including Podarcis mural-is, Lacerta viridis, Coronella austriaca. The Cerová vrchovina region has been settled since the Aeneolithic period and has been considerably changed by economic activities and mining activity. In the protected area of Cerová vrchovina 7 protected territories have been declared: Ragac, Pohansky vrch, Somoska, Hajnacka castle mount, Sovi castle, Jalovske vrstvy, Cakanovsky profile. One path in Somoska has been created which is 1,6 km long, with 8 stops. The administration of the protected area of Cerová vrchovina is based in Rimavská Sobota.
